Chapter 2
New Beginnings
I found myself surrounded by fire once more. However, this time I was close enough to get burned. I had no control over my actions as my body walked forward, through the flames, and wasn't hurt in any way. I looked over to someone who was talking in the same scratchy language as the little girl in my other dream. I turned to the man fully and saw that he was like some of the people I had seen at the festival, as he had ears that resembled a wolf and a tail to match. He spoke again for a moment before waiting. it was only a couple seconds later when I heard a sigh coming from my own mouth. Then, as if I understood what they had said, I spoke in the language. The man nodded curtly and walked away. I soon found myself abruptly looking upon two other people- the two I had met at the festival. They were shaking from what seemed like fear and flinched when I spoke again. Once the monologue was finished, They nodded the same way before running away. However, once they turned, my vision blurred, until it turned to plain black.
"Tara? Are you okay?" Tears were in his voice. It was obvious he had continued crying once he woke up. I opened my eyes to see the conformation before me, and nodded.
"Everyone's gone..." He cried, I did the only thing I could have without a voice, I hugged him and patted his back. "Dad... Ana..." He looked around to where they had been crushed and grabbed my hand.
"Will you come with me?" I nodded and got up as we walked over to the fallen clock tower. Some pieces were broken, so I immediately tried to move them. Robby started moving some as well. It was over an hour before we reached anything of value. There was a hand sticking out of the rubble, and I immediately started digging up the body. It took a few minutes to remove all the debris from him, but when we uncovered him, there was a support beam piercing his chest. We both just stood there, tears swelling in our eyes once more. The man was Jim, Robby's father. Robby immediately hugged on to me again.
"Maybe Ana's still alive!" He sobbed before breaking off and starting to dig again, going around his father's body. I just stood there, realizing the helplessness of the situation. We had spend hours looking for Jim, and I knew both of us were tired, hungry, and thirsty.
I put my hand on his shoulder to stop him in his useless attempt. He turned to me, tears overflowing from his eyes, and I mouthed "stop". He stood there, staring at me, his face covered in his tears, and sniffling, for over a minute before he reached over and hugged me again. After a few minutes, I patted his back to get his attention. When he looked up at me, I gestured for us to go and started walking toward his house, holding his hand.
We walked for a couple hours in complete silence before we reached the house. The animals were still perfectly fine, if not a bit hungry, and the forest surrounding the house were still as peaceful and quiet as before. It almost sickened me that after something so horrendous, a beautiful scene like this could still exist.
Robby pushed his chest out and sighed. Tears still in his eyes, he walked up to the animals.
"You guys hungry?" he asked before pouring bags of food out for them. He walked around comforting the animals for quite some time before returning to me.
"There's a lot of Mom's clothes upstairs. you can change out of that. Follow me." I followed him up the stairs like he asked and soon found myself standing in a room that looked like it was last entered years ago. It had an almost eerie look to it, with the wallpaper torn and faded, and cobwebs covered every corner and furnishing. Robby ran to a chest that seemed to be used recently, and opened it up. There were clothes similar to the sundress I was wearing in there.
"All these clothes were my mother's. You can have them, since you're the same size as she was." I nodded and started looking through the clothes. Most of the clothes looked like uniforms, and when I dug down further, the bottom of the chest was lined with weaponry. "My mom, she died in the revolution. She was a master of blades. Dad said she could kill a hundred people in a second with just a steak knife. They said that she died by the hands of Chaos himself. When the revolution succeeded, they gave us her belongings, including her knives and swords, and said they were sorry for our loss." he sighed. "You can have everything in this chest anyway. I'll leave you to get changed out of that burn sundress." With that, he closed the door and walked down the stairs again.
I looked through the chest some more and found an outfit that looked like it was supposed to be for undercover missions. It was a plain black T-shirt, beige pants with a lot of pockets on them, black combat boots, and a long beige jacket with harnesses and pockets for blades everywhere. I got dressed in them and started grabbing some of the knives and daggers. I don't know why, but the outfit seemed wrong without them, and the fact that Chaos was back in power probably meant I should have some sort of protection.
When I was finished arming myself, I walked back downstairs. Robby was looking under the couch in the living room for something. I knocked on the wall to show him that I was there, and, without turning to me he held his index finger up.
"One second." He said before pulling an old book out from underneath the couch. "My Dad was is the resistance too. He wasn't nearly as important as Mom though. He couldn't use any weapons, so instead he did what he could and learned simple magics. This is his spell book." He laughed airily. " I guess it's a good thing I found it last year after he hid it away. Every time he was away on business, Ana and I would try to learn some of the spells. I've only got about a dozen down, but it's better than nothing." I wondered why he would need to know the spells if he was to stay here in safety, and he seemed to read my mind.
"Tara, can you help me?" I looked at him questioningly as to ask "With what?". He sighed. "I want to get revenge on Chaos. I want to find the new resistance and join it and become great like my mother was. I want to be the one who kills Chaos. I want to show him what he did you me, and make him regret it." Tears started pouring from his eyes again, but he didn't try to hug me this time. He just wiped his eyes and looked directly at me again.
"Will you help me?" There was a short pause before I gave my answer.
It was a nod.
